Here in Royal Hospital of Granada St. John of God was confined because they believed him to be mentally-ill but it was here that he found his vocation to serve the mentally-ill, poor-sick and the homeless.
| The ancient hospital of St. John of God in Granada. From their hospital the brother of St. John of God spread through all the world. |
St. John of God and his companion past and present are Consecrated lay-men living in common under the Rule of St. Augustine in the spirit of poverty, chastity, obedience and gratuitous service to the poor-sick and needy. |
| Discourse of Pope John Paul II , Rome 1988 “Great things await you, dear Brothers and the Church asks you to undertake them in the spirit of our Lord’s words: ‘As long as you did it to one of these you did to Me.’ and it is in these words that you must find the basis of your consecration in the healing ministry. The Second Vatican Council clearly outlined the importance and the dignity of service to the sick. You can and must aspire to serve those patients suffering mental illness, the incurable, the dying, those abandoned. They have no need of great technology or large institutions. Your community should be a point of reference in regard to the safeguarding of the rights of the human person, and respect for the liberty of the individual. You exercise compassion for the suffering; and they also have much to teach you in the transformation of your lives of consecration, the infirmary is your university.” |

"My dear Brothers let us remember how beautiful our vocation is. And that God the Father has chosen us among millions for his exclusive service. Let us be grateful for this calling, and show our gratitude in all our works. Does there exist anything more beautiful or more counseling on this earth than to serve the poor and the sick. Knowing that all we do to them is done to our Divine Savior Himself. Give thanks to the Lord everyday for our marvelous vocation. And everyday pray that He give us the gift of perseverance to the very end of our earthly life." -Blessed Eustace Kugler
