Holy Humility of Mary “My spirit rejoices in God my Savior because He has regarded the humility of His handmaid.” Lk 1:47.48. In the clear light of truth, which we call humility, Mary, knows and acknowledges and renders ceaseless thanks for the wonderful and wholly unique graces conferred on her by the free choice of God. By the foreseen merits of the Passion and Death of Jesus, it was upon Mary that the Divine Blood first descended, making her always Immaculate, causing her to become the ever Immaculate Mother of God! The outpouring of the Blood of Christ is the supreme expression of God’s love. And this Blood was shed in the first place, and with the greatest intensity of love, for Mary. “My soul glorifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” The Heart of Mary has never ceased this work of praise, this exultation in humility. Nor shall it ever cease through all eternity. And Mary seeks humble souls who will be an increasing extension, through all the nations and all the ages of the praise of her own heart. And we, ‘one heart with Mary’ seek to glorify God for all the wholly marvelous graces conferred upon her. This is the interior spirit or rather, the spirituality of the Humility of Mary. For those who are called to live this life of union with Mary in the spirit of her holy humility, it is not immediately apparent, perhaps, that the primary or direct object of this spirituality is neither Mary herself nor her humility. Rather, the interior gaze of the soul is directed toward the Most Holy Trinity: “We offer ourselves to God the Father through the Son in the Spirit in union with Mary in the spirit of her holy humility.” “Behold, all generations shall call me blessed.” This prophecy has ever since been realized. The whole earth praises her. Nations are consecrated to her. The privilege of her Immaculate Conception, the joy of her Divine Maternity, the anguish of her Sorrows, all have been and are now the object of praise and veneration. We also are consecrated to her and we too form part of that “generation which calls her blessed.” But our praise is different. The emphasis of our praise is not directed solely to Mary, but rather with Mary to the Most Holy Trinity. As was mentioned, this is a reality not always clearly evident even to those who are called to a life of union with Mary in the spirit of her humility. “We offer ourselves to God the Father through the Son in the Spirit in union with Mary.” And this is indeed the divine economy: that men and angels and all creation be one in Christ adoring the Father in the Spirit. It is Christ alone Who can render worthy praise to the Father for the wonders wrought in Mary. Thus, united with Mary in her Humility, we join in this work of Praise of the Spirit of Christ. Saint Augustine says it is the ‘one Christ, Head and members’ loving the Father in the Spirit for that wonder of grace: Mary, redeemed by the Divine Blood! In that same Spirit the ‘One Christ’ is loved by the Father in return. Here is the very summit of the spirituality of the Humility of Mary.
